There’s been no limit for the Lady Falcons basketball team this year. With students and staff alike firmly in their corner, the ladies soared past Bethlehem with a score of 64-47 to the Section II championship Monday evening at the Times Union Center—their first in fifteen years.
Monday evening was only the latest stop in what has been an outstanding season for the Lady Falcons. With an impressive record of 20-1, the Falcons have proven their worth to every competitor in their way.
Each and every Lady Falcon deserves to be proud of what she has accomplished. Standouts include senior Emia Willingham-Hurst, one of five finalists for the New York State Miss Basketball Award, and freshman point guard Ayanna Hunter. Both ladies were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Also deserving a round of applause is first year head coach Decky Lawson, who given the Falcons the drive and determination they’ve needed every step of the way.
Even still, Monday’s victory was more than just a basketball game. It was a show of unity from AHS. Students, teachers, and staff all assembled to cheer on the Lady Falcons, both at the pep rally the day of the game and at the Times Union Center. You can’t hide that Falcon Pride!
The Lady Falcons now set their sights on the state championships. They next play defending state champion Cicero-North Syracuse at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse this Saturday at noon. Wins here and in two following games would net the Falcons the state championship, a challenge which AHS has not met since 1997.
The odds may seem stacked against them, but this year’s Lady Falcons are the team to do it. They’ve soared past their opponents time and again, and now they look to fly straight to the state championship. There’s never been a better time for Falcon Pride.
