I still remember last year like it was yesterday. I was a staff writer for The Nest during its first year. As the summer drew closer, Mr. Dring asked me if I would be returning next year, explaining that I could play a key role in expanding the journalism club far beyond its initial form. And I knew he was right. What I didn’t know then was that I would be editor-in-chief, that I would work with the greatest staff a person could ask for, and that I would cover an unbelievable range of stories in the interest of Falcon Pride.
As my senior year and time at the helm of The Nest come to a close, I’m thankful for many things. I’m thankful for the opportunity to grow as a writer, journalist, and person. I’m thankful for having met the wonderful people who comprised the staff—you all pulled this together, and for that I can never thank you enough. And I’m thankful to have been able to unbiasedly and innovatively bring the news to you, the reader.
Because you’re what all this is really about. We’ve truly run the gamut of stories this year, from the football team’s momentous win to the arrival of Nooks in the library, from the girls’ basketball team’s championship season to the NYS Education Commissioner’s student forum, from gun control to climate change and everything in between. But none of it would have been possible without your unwavering support. It does not go unnoticed.
Simply reading the paper, leaving comments, and letting people know we’re here goes a long way. The support from the community helps keep us going. We wouldn’t be here without you.
And of course, the 2013-2014 school year promises to be bigger and better for Albany High and The Nest. With the return of the elective journalism class, we look to continue to expand our numbers. But the class isn’t the only way you can get involved. See Mr. Dring. Shoot us an email – [email protected]. Write stories. Let your voice be heard.
My staff bio says I’ve “grabbed the reins of this rickety ride and have steered us down victory lane.” I can’t think of a better way to put it.
Thank you. And never forget your Falcon Pride.
