Public Service Announcement: punk’s not dead! Fall Out Boy proved that it is very much alive with the release of their new EP, Pax-Am Days, produced by musician Ryan Adams.
Fall Out Boy is an alternative emo/pop-punk band hailing from Illinois including four members; Patrick Stump (guitar, vocals), Pete Wentz (bass), Joe Trohman (guitar), and Andy Hurley (drums).
Their newest 9-track EP, Pax-am Days, is a blatant contrast from previous Fall Out Boy albums. Old Fall Out Boy sounds ranged from emo to pop-rock. However, this new EP exemplifies head-banging, pissed-off punk rock at its finest.
The album erupts with a distorted 80’s punk riff sounding like something off a Misfits or Black Flag album. The first track, “We Were Doomed From The Start”, commences as Stump snarls, “The king is dead!”
This theme continues throughout the record, and it is embellished with rapid guitar solos midway through songs and other rebellious lyrics. Pete Wentz punches out bass lines that are as loud and fast as the guitar parts. The sound is very punk but it’s also much more. Patrick Stump’s vocals are sweet like sugar, even when they’re angry. Fall Out Boy’s overall chemistry blends with these factors to stir up the sugar, spice, and everything nice.
The must-have track off this album is “Caffeine Cold”. It’s a mix of old FOB and new FOB and throws in some pop-rock while retaining the Misfits sound present on the majority of the record.
Old School punks, have a listen to Pax-Am Days, you won’t be disappointed! As for die-hard FOB fans, not to worry, their sound isn’t completely diminished. Patrick Stump’s pleasant-sounding vocals are present on this album just like past which adds a twist to punk rock, making it a tad more melodious.
