After 5 terms of service to Albany, Mayor Jennings has decided to pass the proverbial torch. A service to praise his actions and contributions was held on Saturday October 26. The service was sponsored by the Center for Economic growth. The banquet also served as a fundraiser for the children’s wing at St. Peter’s Hospital.
Jennings believed that this wing of the hospital deserved more resources and he was inspired to support it after losing his niece to brain cancer. The total amount of funds raised exceeded $30,000. Speakers at the ceremony commended Jennings’ reconstruction of the city’s economy, neighborhoods, and the introduction of new programs to create opportunities for the youth.
To precede his farewell tour, Jennings stated that his inspiration to change Albany came from his experience as a vice principal of Albany High. He said that he was witnessing what was happening to the city through the eyes of the students. Jennings’ deputy mayor, Phil Calerdone, stated “He does it with all his heart, and he does it because he cares about this great city.”
Among many other big names was Carolyn McLaughlin, President of the city’s Community Council. McLaughlin recalled, “Leaders are the mirrors of their communities; when you think of Jennings you think of Albany.” F. Michael Tucker, CEO of CEG, declared, “His influence spread not only through the city’s neighborhoods, but throughout the entire Capital Region.”
At the closing of the ceremony, both the attendees and Jennings presented the gratitude towards his actions, community support, and the donations towards the children’s hospital. Jennings’ actions have made a largely positive impact on the Capital Region and will be remembered accordingly. The mayoral election will take place on November 5, 2013.
From all of us at the Nest, we wish Jennings the best of luck with all of his future endeavors.
