More Red Light Cameras in Albany

Albany, NY- Two more red light cameras will be added in Albany in effort to reduce accidents and save lives.

According to Albanyny.org, every year more than 700 people are killed and over 100,000 others are injured because of red light running.

Brendan Cox, the Chief of Police in the Albany Police Department, wrote that this new system of cameras could be a solution to reduce the amount of red light running and will be funded by the violators themselves.

The Albany Police Department sees the cameras as a way to “modify driver behavior” which they hope will allow for fewer accidents.

The two new cameras will be located at the northbound approach at Northern Boulevard and Shaker Road and at the eastbound and westbound approaches at Central Avenue and King Avenue. The other numerous camera locations can be viewed at Albanyny.org.

If a driver runs a red light their car’s license plate will be photographed. The driver will receive a fifty dollar ticket in the mail after the Police Department reviews the incident and determines that a violation did occur.

If you want to view the way the system functions yourself or would like to read additional rules on how to avoid getting into an accident or receiving a ticket, there are a list of guidelines on how to correctly and safely cross intersections on the city website.
