Star Wars: Battlefront (Video Game Review)
Dice’s attempt on the Star Wars franchise
Star Wars: Battlefront is Dice’s newest release, and offers something new and fresh to many gamers. For those who have or haven’t played the previous Battlefronts, Dice’s newest release is different from those but also from Dice’s popular Battlefield franchise. Star Wars: Battlefront packs in a lot of fun, and contrary from what many people have said, offers an extraordinary amount of replay-ability.
Star Wars: Battlefront features numerous game types. First and foremost is the Online Multiplayer. The Online Multiplayer includes nine different game modes, modes such as Walker Assasult and Blast. Most game modes like Blast are replicas of other traditional game modes in shooter games, but Walker Assault is something new.
Two sides of twenty gamers each face off, one playing the powerful Empire, the other playing the determined Rebels. The Empire must guide the ATAT/s to the Rebel’s base, while the Rebels must fight off the Empire to avoid a disastrous ending. Both sides are consisted of ground troops, specifically Rebel foot soldiers and Stormtroopers. However, power-ups can be picked up on the battlefield, granting you different gameplay. One could be placing you in the sky, piloting a TIE fighter, the other could be giving you control of a Hero or Villain, such as Luke Skywalker or The Emperor. The Hero/Villain gameplay is especially entertaining, as your character is significantly stronger and has a variety of devastating powers to unleash upon the opposition.
My favorite is Darth Vader. Every time I walk onto the battlefield with him, power has been granted to me, and I feel it. I walk towards the battlefront, crawling with enemies, and they, frightened, panic and shoot in my direction. I quickly ricochet the shots with my lightsaber, killing a few, then use the force and choke another.
The other game types feature a combination of single player and CO-OP, whichever one you desire. They are just as fun as the multiplayer, but don’t offer as much replay ability. There are missions that are essentially tutorials, introducing you to the game, and then there are matches with AI controlled players, which, in this case, is essentially online multiplayer, but not online with actual people- instead, are replaced by bots. But the standout game type is Survival. The name says it all: you must fight for your life as you go against waves of enemies seeking to destroy you.
But to address the overall features of the game, both the gameplay and graphics in Star Wars: Battlefront are superb. The gameplay is very smooth and fast paced, and all aspects of the gameplay, from shooting to flying, feel incredibly satisfying. The graphics are what Battlefront has gained most of its attention from however, and it is completely logical. The graphics are absolutely beautiful. The colors are attractive, and the lighting has been done to complete perfection. There is a surprisingly large amount of detail in the game as well, from much put emphasis on character models to multiplayer maps.
Overrall, Star Wars: Battlefront is very promising. It packs in a whole lot of fun, and will keep you playing for a long time. In addition, Dice’s recent add on: the free Battle of Jakku DLC, has been released for everyone to enjoy, and adds in more content for the game.
