The Future Of Destiny

With Destiny 2 on the horizon, many people are speculating as to what the story will be, what kinds of changes will be made, and how it will bring Destiny back into the spotlight. With the release of The Taken King and the recent launch of Rise of Iron, Destiny has re-entered the limelight with a new broader fan-base who want to see the series deliver on what it promised 3 years ago; a fun, open-world, futuristic shooter, with a deep story and developed characters. Warning: this article contains spoilers, so if you want to be surprised, turn away now!

Destiny and its expansions have fleshed out most of the alien races you face in the game. The base game focused heavily on the Vex, the House of Wolves and Rise of Iron fleshed out the fallen, and the Dark Below and Taken King revealed to us the deep lore behind the Hive. However, the Cabal have been left somewhat behind. In the Taken King mission Outbound Signal, it was revealed that the Cabal have requested help from their empire, since most of their leaders and forces have been wiped out by your character and Oryx.

It seems reasonable to speculate that Destiny 2 will feature a cabal invasion of our system; with a possible appearance of their emperor (although I do think they will save that for a later expansion). However there is also another possibility. The nerds among us who read the grimoire cards know that there is a theory that the Cabal in our system are not part of a larger force, but a small part fleeing from an unknown enemy. Some have speculated that this enemy is Oryx, the Taken King; however, if they happen to be wrong, whoever this enemy is could be appearing in the upcoming game, possibly along with some more Cabal fleeing from it.

Cabal will surely play a major role in the next game, and there is speculations that the Vex will appear as well, although they will not be as important to the story as the Cabal. The Cabal often battle with the Vex and even monitor Mercury, the Vex base that no other race (even guardians) has really touched. If a major Cabal force enters the system, it is possible that they will be after Vex technology in order to travel through time. Why would they want to do this? There are many clues throughout Destiny that the Cabal’s home planet has been destroyed. It is possible they might want to go back and stop that from happening. This would also flesh out the Vex more, as the players haven’t learned much more about them since the base game.

Many players don’t pay attention to the story of the game but instead focus on the gameplay and multiplayer aspects, which do need some updates. Destiny 2 will likely fix some of the concerns they have but create more problems in their place. According to Jason Schreler, a writer for Kotaku who specializes in game leaks and isn’t often wrong, Destiny 2 will be scrapping the character we have played as throughout Destiny in favor of a new character. Many people are attached to their character and would like to carry it between games, so this change is likely to be unpopular.

Additionally Destiny 2 will likely be coming to PC, something people have been asking for since the game debuted in 2014, and revamp patrols to make the game-world feel like a real place, with side-quests and settlements your Guardian can visit. This is a much welcome change as patrols bore most players and aren’t often used besides when players are forced to complete them for quests. This is a much welcomed change that the community will accept will open arms. I much stress that this isn’t a legitimate source and that these leaks may well be fake; however given Schreler’s history it is unlikely.

What about the future beyond Destiny 2? What does the far future hold? Bungie has stated they plan to keep the Destiny franchise running for 10 year, so content will be coming for a long time yet. Additionally I predict Xivu Arath, Oryx’s sister will appear towards the end of Destiny 2 and the House of Kings will attempt to unite the Fallen in another expansion, as all the other houses have been devastated by civil war, the Reef, and the player. The farther future is uncertain. We might become allies with the Fallen, meet Osiris, or FINALLY learn what the Exo Stranger had no time to explain. The future looks bright for Destiny and we’re eagerly awaiting its release!
