Revisiting Preseason NFL Predictions

Revisiting Preseason NFL Predictions

Jeff Lembo, Staff Writer

Back in September, we offered some hot takes on what would go down this year in the NFL. 15 weeks later, we’ve experienced an absolutely wild campaign. Some of my predictions have been spot-on, some have been relatively accurate, and some have been embarrassingly wrong. Take a look at what we got right, what went wrong, and what to expect come NFL playoff time in January.

1. What went right:

  • The very first declaration, the fact that Tom Brady and the New England Patriots would win the AFC East, came true. Though bogged down by injuries and looking extremely sloppy at some points of the year, the Patriots captured their ninth straight division title. They’ve been fueled by an MVP-caliber season from Tom Brady, who continues to shine at 40 years old. Look for the Pats to make a deep playoff run in the coming winter months.
  • The Steelers would win their division. They won it with ease, coasting to an 11-3 record, while no other team in their division has more than eight wins. Antonio Brown has had yet another amazing year. This is his fifth straight season with at least 100 catches, powering the strong Steelers offense into January. Look for a potential AFC Championship game match-up against the Patriots, in what would be one of the most exciting and anticipated games in recent years.
  • Some teams picked to win their divisions, such as the Seahawks, Falcons, and Raiders, are still in the hunt as the regular season wraps up.

2. What went wrong (Yikes):

  • The glaring mistake was not only picking the Giants to win the NFC East but picking them to reach the Super Bowl. The Giants have endured a terrible season, winning just two games, and had to fire head coach Ben McAdoo with time still left in the year. Ravaged by injuries, the Giants will have a high draft choice in April to start building for the future.
  • Picking the Packers as NFC North champs. After Aaron Rodgers went down with a broken collarbone, Green Bay slipped to a 7-7 record and is in danger of not reaching the playoffs.
  • The Jaguars and the Rams are having strong seasons. However, both these teams came out of nowhere to take hold of their divisions. Led by young quarterbacks, both of these squads have posted 10 wins, and could be dangerous in the playoffs.
  • The Atlanta Falcons are a week to week team. After coasting to the Super Bowl last year before suffering the worst in-game collapse in the history of sports, the Falcons have won just eight games thus far. A certain firepower seems to be missing from their dangerous offense of last year, but Atlanta could still get hot and do some damage in the playoffs.
  • And finally, INJURIES! This was one of the biggest story lines in the league this year, and one that no one could predict. Star players like Joe Thomas, Aaron Rodgers, Dont’a Hightower, Odell Beckham, Jr., Antonio Brown, Ryan Shazier, Carson Wentz (who saw a possible MVP season derailed), Kam Chancellor, Richard Sherman, Sam Bradford, Deshaun Watson, and Jason Peters all went down this year.

3. What to expect in the playoffs:

  • Pittsburgh or New England will win the AFC crown, and they’ll probably have to fight each other for it. If that’s the case, the Pats will win by a field goal, and then Brady will get his sixth ring in February…and still not retire.
  • The New Orleans Saints or the Eagles will win the NFC. The Eagles are a well-rounded team and seem more likely to reach the big game than New Orleans, but Drew Brees has had a strong season and can never be counted out.
  • There’s no clear favorite for MVP, but as for a guess, there’s Carson Wentz, Tom Brady, or Todd Gurley. This will definitely be a fun race to watch play out over the end of the season.
