Why You Need To Watch: The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina

Do you like twisted plots, supernatural occurrences, and a little childhood nostalgia? Then Netflix’s new TV show is right for you.

“The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” is a darker and more mature version of “Sabrina the Teenage Witch”, which, if you don’t know, is about a teenage girl who’s half-human and half-witch who has to live essentially a double life. In the Netflix show, Sabrina Spellman has to deal with being torn between her mortal life which includes her friends and her boyfriend and her witch life which includes magic, power, upholding her family name, and a somewhat cute warlock. This develops an intense plot which is more like a balancing act. Sabrina’s secret magical life causes a suspenseful and dangerous twist that makes her walk on eggshells every once in while. Overall, I enjoyed this concept, because it allowed her to deal with relatable teenage problems, while adding the intriguing element of magic that we all hope to exist to some degree.

Sabrina is a driven, compassionate, vocal, and of course rebellious teenager who is definitely not afraid to stand up for what she believes in and herself.  This creates a dramatic plot due to her aunts constantly trying to guide her in life, encouraging her to join the Church of Night and obey the Dark Lord. Sabrina does not agree with the Coven’s standards and plans to eventually defeat him somehow, so she continuously disregards their rules without a care in the world to help her friends or whatever she sees that it’s right.

Speaking of her aunt, she actually has two, Hilda and Zelda. They are pretty much polar opposites apart from the fact that they’re sisters: Hilda is more upbeat, carefree,  and somewhat childish, while Zelda is more stern, wise, and a bit cold-hearted in a sense, although she cares for her family very much. Zelda in particular is very worshipping of the Dark Lord and pressures Sabrina into joining the Church. A lot of the defiance in the plot surrounds that conflict.

Although there may be some religious elements to this show, they are more regarding the supernatural concepts of the show while intertwining with the darker concept surrounding the Coven and its rules relating to being a witch.

I would absolutely recommend this show to especially anyone who has watched  the original version, but also anyone who enjoys complicated dark plots with a supernatural twist along with a bit of romance and drama.
