The Albany’s Boys Varsity Soccer team won their game Thursday night, 10/12, under the lights, 1-0 against Shen. This was a very important win for the team. It was their second to last home game. The spirit was high, the falcons were loud, and the boys were on fire. They were playing one of the best games of their season, really putting their all out onto the field.
Players, including Senior defender, #19, Farrel Leon, Junior goalkeeper, #1, Logan Farro, and Sophomore forward, #10, Thierry Nkurunziza ruled the game. Nkurunziza and Farrell scored the first and final goal. Nkurunziza scored the goal with a pass through Shen’s defense from Leon. Following that, Farro kept strong with his defense of the goal for the rest of the game, not letting in any of Shen’s attempts. The defense line that assisted Farro in this tight control of the goal included Farrell, #14, Kendell, and #4, Nazir. Both teams aggressively held their defense and the game ended at a 1-0 win Albany.
It was a game full of tense anguish. The first goal was scored at the eighth minute and the attempts later were filled with nail biting anticipation. There were some amazing saves by Farro. A game defining save was made during the last minute by Farro, really defending the team and securing their win. The boys had amazing communication and footwork on the field.
It was a truly exhilarating game, that was important to the team, and ended in a jubilant celebration for Albany, with students jumping over the bleachers to storm the field, and congratulate the boys. There was a specifically encouraging moment where Leon ran the ball boy across the field to join in on the celebration. When asked to quote the game, Head Coach, Mr. Weiss, Albany High History teacher, said it was, “An important win for the program, which showed the courage, commitment and confidence of the team.”
It’s been amazing to see so many past and current falcons alike support the team. Including, but not limited to, 2022 Goalkeeper Brian Milligan, and 2021 Goalkeeper Cesar Bermejo.
This was the second to last game of the season, and the stands were alive. They then went to sectionals against CBA on Thursday 10/19. The game unfortunately ended in a loss and the season was over.
