Don Toliver’s No Pole is euphoria in song form.
Released as Track 1 on the deluxe version of Toliver’s 3rd studio album Lovesick, No Pole was first teased in February this year.
On the song, Toliver sings about a woman looking to leave her dancing lifestyle behind. Toliver plays the narrator, who sings about his intense connection with this woman. The narrator gives insights into his own life of hedonism and overindulgence, while encouraging the woman to change her lifestyle.
Toliver has been slept on since his debut LP Heaven or Hell, released in 2020. He blew up with his hits No Idea and After Party, which drew lots of attention, alongside his feature on Can’t Say off of Travis Scott’s ASTROWORLD.
The real strength of No Pole is its intro, where Toliver harmonizes over the beat. Vocal range is a strong part of Toliver’s songs and they truly shine on this track.
No Pole is such a highlight in Toliver’s discography because of how fast-paced and well composed this song is. From the structure of verses and vocals and how they are layered, to how the song makes you feel all throughout the course of it through the synths used or Toliver’s lyrics. It’s a great song from start to finish.
It’s the epitome of an Album intro. Album introductions provide a glimpse into the LP and set the precedent for the rest of the album, ushering in the next song elegantly. When done right, the album intro hooks the listener in for the ride. When done poorly, it outshines the rest of the songs on the album and the rest of the songs don’t live up to the first song.
In the end, No Pole is an ideal song from start to finish. Everyone should listen to it at least once in their lives. This song is a 9 out of 10.
