Funny Story by Emily Henry was a heartwarming book. Following Daphne Vincent who uproots her life to follow her finance, Peter to Waning bay, Michigan, Henry created this comfort read surrounding the idea of finding your people. She got accepted to her dream job as a librarian at the local library and moved in with Peter to this gorgeous house right near the water. Unfortunately for Daphne, Peter dumps her for his childhood best friend Petra who he hooked up with at his bachelor party. After he shows up the next day and basically tells her he realized he loved Petra and needed to pursue it, he unceremoniously kicked her out of their house and “graciously” allowed her time to pack because they (Peter and Petra – nauseating similar names) were going on a long trip to connect in their new relationship.
Down a place to live, low on finances, and even lower on trust, Daphne’s prayers were answered when Miles (Petra’s now ex boyfriend) came barreling into the house and found that Peter and Petra were already gone. Two heartbroken individuals who thought they had lost the love of their lives come together in this story about friendship, love, and finding a place you can call home. Daphne, still heartbroken over Peter, realizes she has no friends of her own and no place to live. She moves into Miles’ apartment into the room Petra had literally been using as a closet. Over the course of this adventure Miles and Daphne realize they are way better off without their so-called soulmates, fall in love and basically ride off into the sun together. Daphne makes friends with her coworker Ashleigh and establishes herself as a small town librarian. Miles has an amazing sister, Julia who misses her brother and unfortunate circumstances have led to her moving in with them – just as things were getting good. Julia ends up being a firecracker of a human being and the best little sister ever. Miles learns to trust, and Daphne finds stability. They end up happy ever after and deeply in love. The funniest part was when Peter tried crawling back to Daphne after realizing he did not in fact love Petra.
This book was so good. It’s comforting and heartwarming, and puts a clutch on reader. Emily Henry never fails, each of her small town summeresque reads are so good. From Book Lovers to this most recent read, she can easily become you go-to author. From the banter to the enemies to lovers she has it down to a science. She has been able to continuously produce these comfort reads that connect readers from around the world. This book in particular, from watching Daphne find a place she feels comfortable enough to call home, to Miles learning to trust love and watching Peter lose everything because of his idiotic choices was incredible. I would recommend this book to just about anyone, it’s a sweet comfort romance filled with character growth and healing childhood trauma. Emily Henry is amazing.
