One of Them Days is one of the best comedies I’ve seen in the last couple of years.
Set in L.A., the Issa Rae produced-film features two best friends Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) going to the extremes in a race against the clock to get money to pay their rent.
I adored this movie. I saw it in theaters three times. It’s incredibly funny. Keke Palmer delivers a standout performance. Her facial expressions, vocal inflections, body language – it all simultaneously contributes to the pure comedy of her character. She is a great actress. The charisma she oozes bleeds into her character, the skits, and the overall plot.
This film was SZA’s acting debut. For her first role, I feel she did an excellent job. Her line delivery was the best aspect of her performance to me. She was naturally funny and genuine. No part of her character felt inauthentic or far-fetched.
The chemistry between Keke Palmer and SZA shined. The bond the two have adds to the realness of their characters’ relationship, as well as the stakes of the things they experience together.
The acting performances in this film are such a highlight. While this wasn’t the most plot-driven, the hijinks and character dynamics encompass the true heart of this movie.
Even down to the side characters, every actor came to this film with something to prove. Janelle James (as Ruby), who’s also making her feature debut with this film, was great in this. Katt Williams (as Lucky) was as funny and as wise as one would expect. Aziza Scott (as Berniece) and Amin Joseph (as King LoLo) were menacing antagonists. I still have no idea who is scarier.
My favorite skit in this film was the Payday Whenever loan skit. Keyla Monterroso Mejia (as Kathy) was the best side character. I was familiar with her from her SUNCOAST and Abbott Elementary guest appearances, so I knew she would be funny. But she truly blew it out of the park.
This movie was extremely well done. The cinematography was excellent. Though, it was never extra or trying to outshine the dialogue or plot. The film was very concise. No scene in this film was a waste. Nothing felt out of place or pointless. Everything that happened served the immersion and progression of the plot. The needle drops did the same. From Doechii to GloRilla to the Jackson Sisters, Issa Rae’s touch with elite soundtrack choices was resounding.
The theater experience was top-tier. Everyone in the theater laughed at least 5 times every single time I saw it.
One of Them Days was so refreshing. To see a Black, woman-led comedy that didn’t base its jokes on being raunchy or overused stereotypes and also addressed issues of rent prices, housing, and gentrification was a breath of fresh air. I believe this will live on to be a staple in Black film. I highly recommend this comedy gem.
One of Them Days is currently showing in theaters.
